SMOG LICENSE RELATED COURSES

ASE A6 Alternative: 

This course is designed to help the technician satisfy the professional certification prerequisites when applying for the smog check technician license examination.  The course covers the following topics: General electrical theory and repair procedures, battery/starting/charging systems diagnosis and repair, and engine/accessory/lighting systems diagnosis and repair. 

Course Length = 5 weeks 

ASE A8 Alternative: 

This course is designed to help the technician satisfy the professional certification prerequisites when applying for the smog check technician license examination.  The course covers the following topics: general engine diagnosis procedures, computer and non-computer controlled air/fuel/ignition systems diagnosis and repair, emission control systems diagnosis and repair, and engine electrical system diagnosis and repair. 

Course Length = 5 weeks

ASE L1 Alternative: 

This course is designed to help the technician satisfy the professional certification prerequisites when applying for the smog check technician license examination.  The course covers the following topics: general powertrain diagnosis procedures, computer-controlled air/fuel/ignition/emissions systems diagnosis and repair, and inspection/maintenance (I/M) failure diagnosis and repair. 

Course Length = 5 weeks

NOTE:  All ASE Alternative Courses are offered every Spring Semester, and are held on Saturdays, from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Smog Check Program 2009 Update Training Course:        

This course is designed to allow current Smog Check Technicians to fulfill their update training requirements to renew their Smog Check license.  It is also designed to allow future Smog Check Technicians to fulfill part of their training requirements to obtain their license.  The course covers an overview of the following topics:  BAR Program Updates, Electronic Throttle Control Systems, Controller Area Networking (CAN “C”), Multiplexing Theory, Mode 6, Parameter Identification (PID) nomenclature, and Application of diagnostics strategies to identify emission failure problems. 

Course Length = 12 hours.  Course is offered on consecutive Saturdays and Sundays from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm.

Smog Check Program 2007 Update Training Course:        

This course is designed to allow future Smog Check Technicians to fulfill part of their training requirements to obtain their license.  The course covers an overview of the following topics:  BAR Program Updates, Manufacturers’ TSB and Internet Information Sites, Advanced Fuel Trim Diagnostics, CAN Networks, OBD-II Mode 6 and EVAP System Diagnostic Procedures, and Computer Program Re-Flash Procedures. 

Course Length = 12 hours.  Course is offered on consecutive Saturdays and Sundays from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm.

Basic Clean Air Car Course:     

All future state licensed smog check technicians must take this course to partially satisfy the education prerequisites for either of the license categories, Basic Area (EB) or Enhanced Area (EA).  Students entering the course must have a minimum of one-year experience/education in automotive engine performance.  The course covers the following topics: Basic operation of the BAR 97-EIS emission analyzer system, BAR rules and regulations, emissions testing procedures for the Basic Area Program, and OBD-I and OBD-II emissions systems diagnostic and testing procedures. 

Course Length = 16 weeks.  Course offered every Fall Semester on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Enhanced Area Clean Air Car Course:       

Future Enhanced Area (EA) state licensed smog technicians must take this course to partially satisfy the education prerequisites for this license.  Students entering the course should have a minimum of one-year experience/education in automotive engine performance, and should also have completed the Basic Area Clean Air Car Course.  The course covers the following topics: Nox  emissions diagnostic and repair procedures, O2 sensor waveform analysis using a Digital Storage Oscilloscope (DSO), loaded mode emissions baselining techniques, catalytic converter efficiency testing procedures, and proper operation of the BAR 97-EIS emission analyzer system.  The course also covers extensive hands-on training and several sessions covering a review of the smog check technician license examination. 

Course Length = 16 weeks.  Course offered every Spring Semester on Monday evenings from 6:00 pm to 10:20 pm.
